Strategic Expansion Plans
The proposed expansion includes the construction of a new five-storey building adjacent to the main gate of the Trauma Centre. This facility will house:

Dedicated Diagnostic Wing: Equipped with state-of-the-art radiological and pathological laboratories, including MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and other essential diagnostic tools.

Surgical and Medical Care Units: Separate wings for surgical interventions and medical care, featuring modular operating theatres and specialized equipment to handle a diverse range of trauma cases.

Attendant Accommodation and Support Facilities: Provisions for patient attendants and essential services to support the increased patient load.

This development is poised to significantly enhance KGMU’s capacity to serve a larger number of patients, offering high-quality emergency care.

Addressing Overcrowding and Enhancing Patient Care
The expansion addresses the critical issue of overcrowding at the existing Trauma Centre, which currently handles approximately 450–500 emergency patients daily. The increased capacity will alleviate pressure on existing facilities, ensuring that all patients receive timely and appropriate treatment.

Government Support and Funding
Detailed project reports for the expansion have been submitted to the state government for approval. The final decision on funding will be made by the cabinet. Upon approval, the project is expected to commence promptly, with construction and operationalization planned in phases to minimize disruption to existing services.

Commitment to Excellence in Emergency Medical Services
KGMU’s Trauma Centre has been a cornerstone of emergency medical care in the region since its establishment. The planned expansion reflects the university’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities and services to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.

Currently, the city’s healthcare facilities are equipped with 560 ventilator beds dedicated to critically ill patients. The planned addition will increase this capacity to 790 beds, representing a significant enhancement in the city’s ability to manage severe medical cases.

KGMU is leading this effort with plans to establish a 100-bed ICU-ventilator ward, significantly boosting its critical care capacity. A senior official from KGMU’s critical care department stated, “The hospital currently operates 350 ICU ventilator beds. The addition of new beds is expected to substantially improve our intensive care services, allowing us to better serve patients in critical need.”

This development comes in response to the increasing demand for critical care services and the need to be better prepared for future healthcare challenges. By expanding ventilator capacity, these hospitals aim to provide timely and adequate care to patients requiring intensive medical attention.

The enhancement of critical care infrastructure is a proactive measure to address potential healthcare crises and reflects the commitment of these institutions to patient care excellence. The additional ventilator beds will not only increase capacity but also improve the quality of care provided to critically ill patients.

In a landmark event for Maharashtra’s healthcare sector, the Hon’ble Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a new 500-bed Hospital along with 100-seat Government Medical College in Nandurbar.
